What is the difference between Absolute Lock & Locate, (Basic) and Absolute Theft Protection (Standard)?
Absolute Home & Office Basic offers the ability to view your device’s location on a map, remotely lock your device, and remotely delete some or all files from it.
Absolute Home & Office Standard offers all the features above. Additionally, if your laptop is stolen, you can report it to Absolute via app.absolute.com and the team of investigators will collaborate with law enforcement to track and recover the device.
What happens when a device is remotely locked?
When a device is locked a full screen version of your custom Lock message is displayed on the device.
- If someone is logged in to your device when the Lock is displayed, they are immediately logged out and the message shows instead of the device login page. If the device is powered off or in sleep mode, the Lock is applied immediately after the device restarts or wakes.
- A user can't dismiss, minimize, or bypass the full-screen message to get to the device login page.
- Remote login to the device is disabled.
- The device's file system is inaccessible via network file sharing (for example, AFP, NFS, or SMB).
- If an individual restarts the device, the device remains locked, even if it's restarted in safe mode.
- If an individual reinstalls the operating system, the device locks again when the Absolute technology self-heals.
How is a device wiped?
Log into your account at app.absolute.com to initiate a Wipe command. Using an internet connection, the command is sent to your device no matter where it is or who possesses it.
A Wipe action scans all files on a device and overwrites all file content with a series of zeros and ones, making the files unreadable and unrecoverable. It then renames and deletes the files, and deletes all user profile data. Note that the operating system (OS) is not deleted.
What are the recovery abilities for a stolen device?
Absolute’s dedicated team of investigators is composed of former law enforcement from various local, state, and federal agencies in the U.S., Canada, and the U.K. All of this investigative experience has led to the successful recovery of over 56,000 devices in over 127 countries around the world.
